A R285-million container handling facility will be developed at the Port of Richards Bay’s Bayvue precinct, following the signing of an agreement between the Grindrod Eyamakhosi Joint Venture and the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).

The investment will increase the port’s yearly container handling capacity from 50 000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to 200 000 TEUs and diversify its cargo profile, which is currently mainly associated with coal, as well as dry, break and liquid bulk.

TNPA selected Grindrod Eyamakhosi as a preferred bidder for the 25-year concession in June last year, following a process pursued under Section 56 of the National Ports Act, and the container facility is expected to enter into commercial operation in 2028.

Grindrod CEO Xolani Mbambo said that it aimed to create a “smart logistics hub” in partnership with Eyamakhosi, while also creating 122 permanent jobs.

The facility will also reportedly incorporate the latest technology and specialised equipment to ensure a quick turnaround of vessels.

Speaking at a signing ceremony in Richards Bay, Transnet chairperson Andile Sangqu said the project reflected the State-owned enterprises' commitment to unlocking capacity through private-sector partnerships.
